Focusing on inclusivity during Womxn’s History Month
For our 2021 Womxn's History Month celebration, it was important to our team that the celebration and recognition was not just for cisgendered women. We used the word ‘womxn’ as an intentional inclusion of those who have in the past been disregarded or may not have been assigned female at birth. While it is important to recognize cis women in history, there is a rich tapestry of trans, non-binary, and non-male figures who deserve recognition.
Our programming throughout the month focused on this idea – celebrating womxn on our team, throughout history, and those making an impact today. The Culture Committee organized several events to recognize womxn’s accomplishments and create space for womxn at Pager to discuss their experiences.
Guest Q&A with Solutions Architect Natalia Venditto
Natalia Venditto, a designer-turned-software engineer and Principal Solutions Architect at Netcentric, spoke with Pager’s staff about her experience as a woman in tech. She discussed how to advocate for yourself in the workplace, how to build teams that value diversity, and ways to encourage leadership from within. She also opened the floor to employees to ask questions, offering education and support for womxn and allies at Pager.
Womxn’s History Month Trivia
The Culture Committee shared information about a variety of womxn making an impact on society today across education, tech, entertainment, politics, and more. Some figures highlighted include:
Reshma Saujani, a lawyer, politician, and founder of Girls Who Code
Gabby Rivera, a writer, comic book author, and creator of Marvel’s first lesbian latina superhero, America Chavez
Mary Mahoney, the first African American to study and work as a professionally trained nurse in the U.S.
Stacey Abrams, a politician, lawyer, voting rights activist, and author, known for mobilizing voters for recent elections in Georgia
Laverne Cox, a trans actor and the first trans person to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy
Parinya Charoenphol, a Thai boxer, Muay Thai champion, model and actor
Importantly, we also highlighted some of the womxn team members at Pager, who shared what they saw as their “superpower,” their recent accomplishments, and what womxn have served as an inspiration to them.
The womxn at Pager then participated in trivia about these team members and figures, and the winner received a gift certificate to the Harlem Chocolate Factory.
Womxn’s Roundtable
Finally, we also hosted a roundtable discussion for the womxn at Pager. This offered a safe space for womxn to discuss their experiences in tech, in the workplace, and in daily life. The roundtable also provided a platform for womxn to discuss how Pager could improve the experience for womxn, and for womxn to share resources and sources of inspiration with others.
Highlighting Inclusivity
Throughout Womxn’s History Month at Pager, inclusivity was at the forefront. Our team is focused on creating an environment that makes all employees feel safe and welcome, and highlighting the intersectionality of a womxn’s experience is core to this mission. We look forward to finding ways to continue supporting womxn at Pager and beyond.
