People Power Pager: Sahir Memon, Senior Engineering Manager

In this series, we spotlight an employee who is dedicated to helping improve the lives of the patients we reach every day to learn more about the work they do and what drives them. We spoke with Sahir Memon, a Pager Senior Engineering Manager.


Tell us about yourself. Who are you, and what is your role at Pager?

I'm Sahir Memon. I'm a Senior Engineering Manager here at Pager. I lead two teams at Pager. The Integrations team is responsible for creating plugins to enable custom workflows that our clients use on a daily basis. I also lead a team that is responsible for re-architecting all of Pager’s technologies for scale. 


What drives you? What are some of the goals you're working towards?

That’s a good question, and there are a few different parts to my answer. Firstly, I would say I have my own personal drive and ambitions. I have a lot of goals for myself – sometimes unrealistic – but I have goals for myself. It’s important to me that the work I’m doing contributes toward those goals. 

Aside from my own personal drive, I’m driven by the teams I'm leading.  Every single day I have an opportunity to coach and mentor engineers and my peers. Every single day, I have an opportunity to be coached and mentored by them. 


Is there anything that's become part of your new quarantine routine that's been helpful for you?

During the pandemic, I actually moved to a new city where I don't know anybody. So it has been a really different experience. I’ve spent a lot of time watching TV and movies, like we all have, but I've also spent a lot of time reading and learning to play piano. Cooking and barbecue is something that I enjoy, so I've been doing that as well. 

CitiBike has been a major success for me. I love that Pager offers a Citibike membership as a perk. It's been fantastic. It's certainly helped me a lot during quarantine. I can just go bike around the city whenever I like. There are also a lot of interesting virtual activities out there, like happy hours, online games with engineers, or painting classes, and I’m interested in learning more about things like that.

We also have unlimited PTO at Pager, which is great, but studies have shown that people end up taking less time off when it’s unlimited. As a manager, you have to think about ways to ensure that unlimited PTO is not seen as a gimmick, but as a perk. It can increase productivity and raise morale, but that requires leading by example, which can be difficult sometimes. That said, I plan on doing just that. I am already planning out time to take off! I have to find ways to make sure my team isn’t burnt out – this means sometimes having the team call it a day a little early, having a happy hour, and making sure people use their PTO and don’t work on weekends. It’s a matter of making sure these perks are actually used so it’s seen as a positive.
