A Heartfelt Issue: Addressing the Maternal Mortality Crisis and Inequities in the U.S.

Urgent action is needed to address the alarming maternal health crisis in the United States. Just consider these troubling statistics: the maternal mortality rate in America is nearly three times higher than France and more than seven times higher than Germany.

To address this highly preventable medical crisis, Pager Health, a leader in care navigation serving 28 million members, has established a new collaboration with League, the industry’s leading healthcare consumer experience platform, trusted by organizations such as Highmark Health, XO Health and Manulife.

Our new Maternal Health Solution delivers engagement, navigation and virtual-care services at scale, providing mothers, especially those on Medicaid, with immediate access to the tools and resources they need to have a healthy pregnancy, delivery and postpartum journey.

Built on Google Cloud’s infrastructure, this mobile-first solution will embed Pager Health’s secure chat tool within League’s CX platform, leveraging clinical protocols, behavior change science, and engagement best practices to ensure moms receive personalized, evidence-based care journeys and immediate access to a nurse for support, guidance, and answers about their concerns, from early contractions to high blood pressure and beyond.

The Maternal Health Solution will serve as a comprehensive resource, offering self-guided content and journeys, health assessments, educational materials, and a provider search feature. As a result, the experience will both complement in-person care and enhance digital access to care for mothers in maternity care “deserts” where care is difficult to come by, improving care adherence and closing care gaps that will result in greater outcomes.

Advancing Health Equity

Expectant mothers experience significant health inequities. In 2022, for example, the mortality rate among Black women was 49.5 deaths per 100,000 live births, compared with just 19 for White women, 16.9 for Hispanic women and 13.2 for Asian women. The Maternal Health Solution will screen for Social Drivers of Health and then connect patients to the most relevant community resources.

Daily Data Integration

The files, transcripts and chat summations generated by interactions on the Maternal Health Solution will be integrated each day into clients’ EMRs so providers have a comprehensive and up-to-date record of each patient’s clinical history.
