At Pager, the driving force behind everything we do is our employees. Team members are mission-driven and critically focused on what they can do to help individuals improve their health and make better decisions. We’re proud to have a team of unique individuals who bring different strengths, perspectives, and interests to our organization.

In this series, we spotlight an employee who is dedicated to helping improve the lives of the patients we reach every day to learn more about the work they do and what drives them. We spoke with Amarachi Asonye, a Pager Senior Project Manager.

Tell us about yourself. Who are you, and what is your role at Pager?

My name is Amarachi Asonye. I am a Nigerian-Louisianan lover of Cajun food and an avid traveler (RIP 2020). I'm a Senior Project Manager here at Pager. I work closely with one of Pager’s largest clients, as well as with Pager’s product managers and engineering team on various projects.

I'm managing a collection of different projects to enhance our platforms and make it easier for a customer service agent and our nurse team to help and serve health plan members.

I also lead the effort to provide transparency to the rest of the company on the status of various product and engineering projects. I want to make sure that even though everyone is remote and their heads are down on their work, we have an overview of the different projects happening across the company.

What drives you? What are some of the goals you're working towards?

I believe in the law of attraction, and I also believe that how you see the world is how the world will perceive you. So on that note, even though I know there are a lot of things happening in the world right now, I try to be optimistic and positive in whatever I do.

It’s important to have a morning routine in this remote environment. I do yoga with positive affirmations. I also try to be grateful for at least one thing either every day or every other day – because it's very easy to get lost in the negative. It's very easy to get lost in what's happening in the world, the status of the projects, or client demands. The routine helps me set my intention for the day. It also helps to take a step back and focus on the individuals you’re working with. When you ask a person, "How are you," and you really mean it, it helps others remember that everyone is human, and we’re all navigating this experience together.

Some people may just respond, "Oh, I'm fine. I'm okay," and stop right there. But I try to build a little bit of a personal experience and relationship with both clients and coworkers. I think it's important for you to know who you're working with. You spend a lot of time at work. So, I do try to be optimistic, encouraging and just bring a little bit of positivity into everyone's day.

What excites you? Are there any current projects, challenges, and/or opportunities here at Pager that are particularly interesting to you? Especially now in remote-work life?

One of the things that excites me is the people I work with, to be very honest. There are four people that I talk to on a daily basis. Although we are in different departments, we are all on the same team – trying to tackle various issues or challenges. We work together to say, "All right, what's the game plan?"

On days when I'm exhausted, what makes a difference is the people I work with, and knowing that our Culture Committee and company leadership are focused on continually improving the employee experience at Pager – balancing work and life at a fast-growing startup, and also dealing with the COVID-driven changes in our work and lifestyles. We are not using our status as a startup to mask the issues and challenges we face. We understand that we are experiencing growing pains, as many startups do. We are challenging the status quo and striving to improve. So when I think about work, those are the two things that excite and inspire me.

Have there been any perks or benefits that Pager provides that have helped you with any of this?

It's been great to have those team dinners when I can reimburse the food and we have lunches for the department. There’s a department sync, and engineering has squad syncs as well. So, that’s been nice because it forced me to say, "You know what? I'm going to take this time to eat lunch and spend time with the team." And Pager pays for it, so that’s really nice. It reminds me of the free food days in the office.

Thank you, Amarachi, for all that you do and for the positivity you bring to Pager!
